t had been less than 4 months since Molly and Derek had the conversation about “the contract” with their son, Ben. It was very simple: no drugs, no paraphernalia, and no drug seeking posters allowed in the house. Those are the house rules. Ben did not go for rules. He threw the contract down and broadcast, “I am out of here!” Molly and Derek stared wordless as he walked out the door with only a daypack.

Since the time that promise was made there have been some turbulent times; and at times I have wondered how we were going to get along without killing each other. Since he turned 18 there are a few things that he now has the legal right to do that are very annoying to me, but I cannot do anything about it except enforce our house rules.
