Less than two weeks later the ball drops, I receive an email from one of the staff at the RTC “Are you aware that your son brought in drugs and gave them to some of our kids?” One sentence, guilty, without proven innocent, there was no doubt in those words that my son had done the damage.

A Family Dream Come True
Today we pack up, mom, dad, brother, dog and drive back to Provo, Utah, our son is discharging from Heritage Schools Residential Treatment in two days. This is the real deal, there is no going back this time and we are bringing him home for good. Not much more to say, [...]

Honestly I don’t know if we will ever be prepared for him to come home and I don’t know if that is really possible. The biggest hurdle may be letting go of the past so that it does not over shadow the future holds, we all need to build trust and really value all the great progress he has made. I truly do feel that we are getting the son back that we once knew. We have all changed, I know he has too and we must embrace the change.

In one week my son is discharging after 1 year 8 months from the Heritage Schools in Provo, Utah. Prior to Heritage he had a short stint at another RTC, where he was asked to leave because “they did not feel they could keep him safe”. Before that he was in Wilderness for 3 months [...]

Most teens that are sent to treatment centers are hurting due in part to some life experience. It is from this pain they have gone off track and learned negative ways of getting attention trying to numb the pain. This is where some may be confused in thinking their teen needs a “Juvenile Boot Camp” to set them straight. This is also how I have come to the conclusion that most teens are not “bad” but are in need of guidance and help, which our society does not do well, they only punish.
