Boys Are Lagging Behind Girls in Education

Boys are at a disadvantage when it comes to today’s education model

The education emphasis of the ’90′s was to help the girl’s succeed, especially in areas of math and science, while the boys are lagging behind, particularly in reading and writing. Today parents and educators, are scrambling to address the problems, from questioning teaching methods in preschool to rethinking single-sex schools.  Boy’s tend to be more active and noisy, unorganized and learn verbal skills much later than girl’s. So naturally early education teachers that are mainly female have very little tolerance for the boys. I can remember the teachers sighs when they had a boy heavy class vs. a female heavy class. Boy heavy meant the teachers job was not going to be easy, especially when it came to discipline. Class rooms today are not boy friendly and many feel boys are set up for failure.

Peg Tyre has written a book on this very subject, The Trouble With Boys: A Surprising Report Card on Our Sons, Their Problems at School, and What Parents and Educators Must Do. In 2006 she wrote the cover story for Newsweek Magazine, The Boy Crisis. This book is in depth study of her findings including  an overview on why boys are falling behind girls’ achievement in school. She noticed a trend as schools across the country cut recess, music and extracurricular subjects not required by state tests, lead to the number of students taking medication for ADHD rising.

The author, Peg Tyre, claims boys are expelled from preschool at a rate five times that of girls and are twice as likely to be diagnosed with a learning disability. Boys learn early on that school is a game they can’t win, and so they decide they don’t want to play. In her book she does not blame parents, teachers or even distractions such as television or video games. She would like to see parents and teachers work together, with all the data and find ways to make the educational experience better for all genders.
