The first time I heard about “The Stages of Change” was in March 2007. My son was in the psychiatric ward for an eating disorder (very unusual for a male). The nutritionist was explaining to me where she thought he was in recovery and told me to research the “Stages of Change“. Of course at this time I hung on to every word a professional spoke to me, I was in such uncharted territory and scared to death. Looking back at these stages, I don’t think most teens have this much foresight, most are very impulsive. I have always heard that “relapse” is a part of recovery and I guess this is where it comes from. I was at one of my favorite blogs Addiction and Recovery News and they had information about some of the studies on spontaneous vs. planned attempts to change and the critics of the stages of change. After reading the arguments I tend to agree, especially when it comes to teens. Follow the link to read why, Addiction and Recovery News: Spontaneous vs. planned attempts to quit.
