A recent study was performed on 488 children ages 7-17 to determine what can help with anxiety, the biggest study of its kind. There were four test groups that received only therapy, drugs and therapy, or drugs alone. Overwhelming success was found with all three treatments. At six centers around the country they randomly assigned each group to four 12 week treatments:
- up to 200 milligrams daily of Sertraline
- received 14 one hour long sessions of psychotherapy, without drug treatment
- both drug and psychotherapy treatments
- dummy pills / placebo
The results:
- 81% in the combined treatment group improved in 3 months.
- 60% were improved with therapy only
- 55% improved in the Sertraline-only group
- 24% in the placebo group
This is great news for parents and teens that do not want to use drugs as a treatment option.
