Thought this was a fun post for the weekend How to Turn Down a Drink – wikiHow. The pressure to drink tends to be less as you age and attend parties or social situations. The sloppy drunk is usually looked down upon or someone escorts the person out before they make a total fool out of themselves. Personally, I feel better when I don’t drink or I watch the amount of liquor I partake of in an evening. Today amongst the adults I socialize with there seems to be more awareness and people are becoming health conscious. Hopefully it is not to late!
If you don’t need the list for yourself I am sure your teens will. They might not know how to turn down a drink gracefully. This might help you talk about how to handle social situations where drinking is an issue for them. There is heavy social pressure that many of them feel to drink, use drugs and be accepted. Today, I would imagine it takes a strong teen or college student to stand up to peer pressure. Easy to say, but it may be best to avoid the heavy drinking party set.
Here are a few of the ideas in “How to Turn Down a Drink”:
- Carry a decoy, such as soda, sparkling cider …
- Offer to be the designated driver
- If the host is insistant – explain your reasons
- Take a drink, hold it, then dump it! You could offer it to a friend.
- Get allies
What has worked for you? Or do you just not go to social events if you know there is drinking / drugs and you will not be partaking.
