Drug Testing, Urine Tests They Are Not Always The Answer

Vinegar. Lemon juice. Drain-cleaning products. At least one of these items is probably in your kitchen. And any of them can be used to beat a drug test.

It has been recommended that you drug test your teen, they were caught smoking marijuana or using drugs. They got busted at a school function or you found paraphernalia on their person or in their room. They may be court ordered to do drug testing or you have a family contract to have clean drug tests or they will suffer consequences. All are well intended but beware.

Drug testing is not the panacea; in fact it backfired on us and it can backfire on you.
Here are some of the reasons why:

  • There are a vast number of websites that  have instructions on how to use regular household items to pass a drug test and the kids know where to find them.
  • There is an on-line test-cheating industry that “sells” products to dilute the urine for a clean test. Experts Say Internet and Household Products Bring New Challenges to Drug Testing
  • The drug tests don’t check  for “everything” or all chemicals you must specify what you are testing for therefore some drugs will not show up.
  • All drug testing must be supervised, in other words you must watch you teen pee into the cup and take the cup from them before it can be diluted (or accidently dropped).

How can drug testing backfire?

  • The trust issue – “I am trying so hard to be good and you don’t trust me to be honest with my urine test”. The guilt trip, you feel bad and do not supervise the test. They should be monitored by a professional.
  • The tests must be random; teens must not know when they will be tested. Don’t over test, it is important to have a plan and real consequences if they do not pass clean urine tests.
  • Lastly, this was the biggest backfire for us and to this day I wish we had not done drug testing. Like I said before drug testing does not cover ALL drugs in fact it may not include medications they are on or over the counter drugs. Some of the over the counter drugs are worse than the “illegal” drugs.  All drug tests are different and cover only certain chemicals. If they know they are being tested for one specific drug, they may start using another and the alternate drug may be much worse.

If drugs are truly a problem for your teen, drug testing is not going to make them stop, it may be a short term deterrent.  There is teen experimentation, and there is abusing drugs; there is a huge difference between the two,  you will know. Drug testing may lead to worse drug addictions. If they are using drugs as an escape, to numb their feelings,  life is stressful, then drug testing is not the answer and it will not stop the pain.  They are suffering and need professional help.
