Suicidal thoughts among college students more common than expected is a survey of 26,000 college students across 70 colleges and universities. The survey found that more than half of the students had at least one episode of suicidal ideation in their life and 15% considered attempting suicide and 5% reported make an attempt in their lifetime. The reasons for suicidal thinking in the following order include:
- wanting relief from emotional or physical pain
- problems with romantic relationships
- the desire to end their life
- problems with school or academics
Half of attempters reported overdosing on drugs as their method, said the authors. Interventions need to be available before the crisis begins. With the growing levels of distress at such young ages among all levels of students this is a call to action and suicide prevention needs to involve adminitrators, student leaders, advisers, faculty, parents and counselors. We cannot just depend on mental health professionals and the suicidal student to resolve the issues. There are not enough resources available.
