One World One Dream

Politics aside I love the Olympics

The Olympics have a special place in my heart, I was lucky in 2002 to seize the moment and attend the Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.  They were so close to me geographically, I could not stand the thought of not going. At the last minute and the last weekend, I packed up the car and drove to SLC with the kids. My husband did not want to go, here I am in the middle of winter driving 12 hours plus with an 8 and 10 year old to Salt Lake City, Utah. No tickets and no idea what I was getting into I took the chance and we had the time of our life. We bought tickets off the street (scalpers), went to medal ceremonies, concerts and a few sporting events. Just to be in the Olympic Village was exciting and full of memories I will never forget. I remember telling the boys, this is a chance in a lifetime. What are the chances we would go to Beijing? Now I reminisce back to that time, life just seemed so much easier. I would never miss the opportunity to go to the Olympics again if it came my way. I can only imagine the magic it must hold for the athletes.

Now you’re wondering what does this have to do with troubled teens? Basically nothing, but sometimes I need a break and a reminder of the good times. Even with our troubled teens, we deserve to enjoy our lives. Possibly this is an activity that could be shared as a family, if not don’t let their attitude spoil it for you.

With the huge hour difference how are we going to experience the Beijing Summer Olympics this year? There is always the television, but the internet can provide real time results. Here are some websites and gadgets  I have found:

  • Google Gadget: If you have a personalized iGoogle homepage add this gadget:
    2008 Summer Games
This gadget it displays all the events by day (Beijing time) and can be sorted by country. After the event is over it lists the winning countries.
  • Beijing 2008 Official Website http://en.beijing2008.cn/
Kind of confusing, but includes a lot of good information
  • American Sponsor Site:
    NBC Olympics http://www.nbcolympics.com/
  • To get real time high quality videos on your computer.
    TVTonic http://www.tvtonic.com/olympics/install/ –
Downside you have the following system requirements:
operating system — Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate
Windows Media Center required — included with Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate
I think this is a marketing ploy by Microsoft,  it does not run on my system and I have Windows Vista.

For Mobile Users:

  • CNN is providing game results via SMS. You must register for this free service from your mobile phone go to:  cnnmobile.com/beijing08
  • NBC Olympics: type in mobile.nbcolympics.com in your browser  or text “Olympics” to 51515

Have fun and let’s share the dream!
