My husband and I both have home offices, we have 6 computers in our house and 3 TV’s therefore the media has always been difficult to monitor. I will admit we are guilty. Studies have been done that proves exposure to violent media increases the likelihood of aggressive thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The movie rating system was designed 40 years ago when the only way to see a movie was at the theatre, now we have DVDs, pay-per-view, and movies that are downloadable off the Internet. Children have more access than ever to adult media. How good is the rating system?
In this article, Kids and Violent Movies: A Scary Trend, a recent study that concluded more young kids are watching violent movies while some R rated moves are seen by 48% of kids ages 10-14. A study by Dartmouth researchers, published in the journal Pediatrics, the lead author Keilah Worth, PhD, of the report is quoted as saying “We know so much about the harmful effects of exposure to violent media content, but how much exposure children actually get has largely been ignored”.
It is a scary thought that most parents today really do not know what their kids and teens are watching and how it is going to effect them in the future.
