Son In RTC Breaks Silence

in Being a Parent

Today is a day of celebration. My son has decided to break his silence; it had been over three weeks since he last talked to us. He broke the ice, it was on his terms and he sounded relieved to talk. At the end of our phone conversation, we all exchanged expressions of love. RTC is one turbulent episode after another, when you think everything is going great, they make a quick u-turn, and I am usually not holding on. What I learned this time, they will continue to fall, but it is how they handle each fall. If the episode is less severe, then we are making progress.
I will repeat what I have heard from the staff and said before, when they are struggling is when the real work is being done, as much as we hate to see it.
Will we ever know why he chose not to talk to us? At this time it is not important, I am grateful to have him back. What a precious gift we have been given, I don’t know why it has to be so difficult.
What do you do for yourself to make it through the turbulent times?
