Today we hauled the Christmas decorations out of the garage, time to put up the Tree and snow scene. With a child in residential treatment, Christmas is not the same, not to mention your family is split up. First, what do you get a kid that is in residential treatment? There are so many rules controlling what they can have, it is difficult in today’s society. Second, they don’t give them very much personal space (for good reason), therefore whatever you do end up getting them better not take up to much space. Then, if you’re not going to be with your child for Christmas you have to think about shipping the gifts. Since everything has to be searched for contraband it takes some of the fun out of the surprise. Do you wrap the gifts? Do you send wrapping paper?
As a parent there are a limited number of years to celebrate Christmas as a family, this is just another occasion where I feel like I have been robbed. We missed having Thanksgiving together because our son lost his privileges. But we plan to be together at Christmas no matter what. The last time we saw our son was in September, it will have been 3 months, which is way to long for me. I am really in high anticipation of our visit. I hope since he lost privileges at Thanksgiving he is trying hard to follow the protocol so we can all be together at Christmas and he will be able to leave the facility for the first time in 6 months. Once again way to long.
Our family will be together at Christmas and by the way, we are also bringing our dog!
