I had never heard anything about Residential Treatment Schools, other than the ads in the back of Sunset Magazine, until it was suggested by a psychiatrist that is where our child belongs. I formed an immediate dislike for the man, considered him incompetent just for suggesting such a thing. It was such a remote possibility that I did not research what going to a Residential Treatment Program meant.
By the time the next few doctors suggested the same I was no longer taking it out on the doctors. They, after all, did not know my child or home life; I had things under control with just a few changes. I would start keeping an eye out on what was going on – put some rules down.
The rules did not work; we were in this way over our head. If we did not do something fast the next call might be from the morgue. There are lots of reasons a child may need to go; suicidal thoughts, severe depression, drugs, dangerous sex, etc. The bottom line is your kid is out of control and they are a danger to themselves.
Don’t go to the Internet to find a good school or program, this requires a professional, an Educational Consultant that has a specialty in this area. A good Ed Consultant visits the programs, knows the therapist and then matches what your child needs with what the schools have to offer.
It never is easy having your child away, but for some of us it is the only option.
